Samsung expects to post record-breaking quarterly profit, on the back of stronger chip sales

Samsung Electronics has  today announced  its earnings forecast for the first quarter of the fiscal year 2017. And the Korean behemoth is continuing its fantastic growth spurt even though it has been buried knee deep in controversies since the previous year. Samsung is yet again gearing up to beat Wall Street expectations, courtesy of its fledgling silicon business. In an official blog post, Samsung reported that it is expecting an operating profit of around 9.9 trillion won (approx $8.7 billion). This is 48 percent higher than the profit figures for the same quarter a year before. It is also being touted as the best operating profit figure for the quarter ended March in over three years. The same was about  9.56 trillion won in the first quarter of 2013. The company also expects to report a rather flat revenue figure – 50 trillion won (approx $44 billion), which is 0.4 percent higher than analyst estimates. The Korean giant is projecting the aforementioned figures for Q1 201

RCom retrenches employees, delays payments

The financial stress on telecom players is now coming to the surface at the operational level. Leading telecom services player  Reliance Communications  has retrenched nearly 800 employees in the last few weeks, including some senior ones, as it battles falling revenues and profits. The company has also not been making payments to vendors and other telecom companies on time. Vendors claim that RCom has not been paying interconnect usage charges to some of them for more than two months. Tower companies claim that payments have been patchy and delayed through 2017 and new payment terms have been sought by the company, which would include an interest component if the delay persists. The maximum interconnect user charge (IUC) payments outstandings are towards  Airtel  and Vodafone. Customers have been facing interconnect issues in some key circles for a couple of days, too, for the same reason. An email query sent to RCom and other operators had evoked no response at the time of

Samsung tips best quarterly profit in over three years as chips soar

Samsung Electronics Co. Ltd forecast on Friday its best quarterly profit in more than three years in the January-March period, beating expectations and putting it on track for record annual earnings on the back of a memory chip super-cycle. The Apple Inc. rival has rapidly recovered from last year’s costly failure of its fire-prone Galaxy Note 7 device, despite a political scandal involving vice chairman Jay Y. Lee who appeared in a Seoul court on Friday facing charges including bribing ousted president Park Geun-hye. The global memory chip leader said first-quarter operating profit was likely 9.9 trillion won ($8.8 billion), compared with an average forecast of 9.4 trillion won from a  Thomson Reuters  survey of 18 analysts. Revenue rose 0.4% to 50 trillion won, just ahead of analysts’ forecasts. “The semiconductor business was likely the main driver for earnings,” said Heungkuk Securities analyst Lee Min-hee, adding that sales of mid-to-low tier smartphones also helped the
